The Law of Detachment and Psychic Phenomena

Drawing spirit portraits is my favorite thing “to do” as a human being. Picking up my two pencils, staring at the blank pad of paper, and watching faces emerge on the page is truly magical! And for me, it always will be.

But over the past year, sharing my creative spiritual practice has often led me to exhaustion. The mounting pressures and expectations made me dread making spirit portraits, let alone sharing them. And every desperate comment, message, or e-mail made me feel like I was failing people and exacerbating their grief.

I’m now learning how to use my gifts for the long haul.

How?

One thing that really helps me is employing the Law of Detachment.

The DETACHMENT card from my ‘Subconscious Signals’ oracle deck.

Here’s how The Law of Detachment works, in a nutshell:

Say you want to “manifest” something, or bring it into your life. This desire could be a new home, a loving partner, or a spirit portrait message.

According to the law, you have to become fully okay with the possibility of your desire never manifesting. You must surrender your desire to the Universe (God, Source, whatever you call your higher power) and let 👏 it 👏go👏.

The Law of Detachment explains why every time you stop expecting your crush to text you back — they do. Or why the second you stop expecting your real estate offer to be accepted and look at another house instead — it does.

“To get anything in the physical world, you have to detach from the outcome and be in the process,” as Deepak Chopra says.* This may seem counterintuitive, but the act of detachment is what opens you up to limitless possibilities.

I have learned how to render spirit portraits with little to no expectation, which allows me to

1.) be surprised and delighted by the unexpected outcome, and
2.) create without any real pressure to perform and please people.

I often see my default ‘desire to control' mentality reflected in the comments and DMs and emails I receive (our outer world really reflects our inner world , amirite?).

“Why hasn’t my mom come through yet?” and “I keep checking for my brother, where is he?” are questions that I, as a human being, don’t have the answers to.

Which is why I, too, invite people interested in receiving spirit portraiture to practice the Law of Detachment.

By relinquishing control, you actually make room for the unexpected.

In fact, most people who end up finding their loved ones on my page come by their loved ones unexpectedly. Oftentimes, they weren’t even following me in the first place.

I can’t say for sure, but the Law of Detachment just may be the actual magic of spirit portraiture.

* I would personally add, “To get anything of aligned value in the physical world, you have to detach from the outcome and be in the process” because you can actually manifest a lot of *misaligned* stuff in your life, too (ask me how I know). But I digress, and that’s why this is a mere footnote.
