my first comic: spirit office

When I was a child, all I ever wanted to be was a children’s book illustrator.

From Tomie dePaola (The Art Lesson) to Marissa Moss (Amelia’s Notebook), I would marvel over the drawings for hours at my grandma’s house.

I have worked in the arts most of my adult life. First as a photojournalist (very practical application), then as an artist’s assitant (a rite of passage for all visual artists, distancing yourself from your own practice only to come back twice as strong), a documentary photographer (I still have that website), a psychic medium and spirit portrait artist (likely why you’re here right now), and now I’m finally allowing myself to make art for me.

Not just in service to others. And not in a way that’s entirely practical or obvious.

So I’m 33 and just drew my first comic.

It’s a little episode from the ole “Spirit Office”. It’s a visual representation of how spirit portraiture has worked for me all these years. And as I step away (a little bit!) from client work, I’m allowed to spend more time reflecting on how this work has moved through me and what it means to my becoming.

Are you also going through an identity shift? My new course Verdant Unknown: Mystery Plant Circle for Transformation was designed to support you through that shift. We start Oct. 5.
