comic 029: herbs for my ancestral journey

Tomorrow I am going to Minnesota with my grandmother (85) to research and honor the lives of our ancestors. My grandmother was born in MN but has not been back in more than 65 years.

I am the person in my family who has been tasked with documenting, recording, and preserving the family history, though I’m unsure if this role fell to me or if I chose it.

The way I plan to preserve much of what I’m about to learn is not through uploading information to ancestry.com and findagrave.com (though I plan to do a little of that), rather, the way I plan to preserve much of this history is through my rediscovered love of making comics and illustration.

So here are the herbs I’m taking with me on my journey to Minnesota tomorrow. They are all related to Polish heritage, where both my mom’s parents’ predessors hail from.

In 2025, I have come to realize: If I want to understand myself, I must get to know my ancestors. And if I want to make meaning of this madness, I have to get to know herbs.
